The Deal Men’s stag AA group was designed as a takeoff group from our brother meeting in Fullerton, CA, The Dog on the Roof (DOTR) Men’s Stag Group. The DOTR has been meeting since 1962, and still going strong.

Keith, a member of The DOTR group, and sponsor of Randy T, was speaking in Cedar Rapids. After his speaking engagement Keith spent a week at Randy’s home. Building a drag bike in Randy’s garage, he and Keith discussed forming a stag group here in Des Moines. Before Keith left Iowa, and after another a small discussion in Randy’s basement, they moved ahead. In 1996 a new men's stag group called The Deal was created.

This new group met in Mike T’s backyard in Avon, IA. Attending that first ever meeting was Jim S, Mike H, Pat M, Tommy G, Jeff J, Herb H, Matt C, Mike T, and Randy T. The reading was on taking action to help others. Bill’s Story. 

Wasn't long and more room was needed. The Deal left the backyard and moved to the east side of Des Moines to the MCAT building. That was home for the next 3 years. There was a stint at the Columbus Hall on the south side of Des Moines. Now, The Deal gathers at the White House in Des Moines.

The Deal Men’s Group is known for strong recovery, sponsorship, and service work in all areas of AA. One of our main goals is to make a commitment and finish it!  Members of The Deal created Recovery in Action to help others get on their feet and find a better way. 

The Deal has a strong presence in Treatment and Correction Facilities in Central Iowa.

The fellowship, group outings, discussions, and suggestions are all a large part in an environment full of recovery. We know how to continue our sobriety and strive to teach others. We understand the seriousness of our disease and are willing to discuss the action taken to survive it.
